This week, I had the privilege of attending the Future Ed Group’s pivotal event at the UK Houses of Parliament: “Unlocking Opportunities for the Black & Global Majority Community through Ethical AI.”

One thing is clear: AI is not neutral. It reflects the values—and the blind spots—of its creators. From established yardsticks (such as BMI metrics) to biased synthetic datasets, systemic inequities persist. As Dawn Butler MP put it: we can reform the system—or build our own, but it appears we must do both.
The challenge isn’t just technical. It’s deeply human. AI systems are shaping the future of work, identity, education, and even justice. With a significant percentage of the world’s youth residing in Africa, this is more than inclusion—it’s a leadership imperative. We must co-create a future where ethical AI is not a side initiative but the default operating principle.
The uncomfortable truth is that most private interests still optimize for profit, not people. But as AI strategy leaders, we have a responsibility to ensure good core values—equity, access, accountability—are embedded throughout the AI lifecycle: from data to deployment, from governance to autonomous agents.
What does responsible leadership in AI look like? It looks like investment in grassroots education, community-first platforms, and long-term funding—not tokenism. It looks like ensuring the builders of tomorrow’s systems reflect the diversity of the world they serve.
If AI is to be truly transformative, it must be ethically inclusive by design. This moment is not just about technology—it’s about trust, power, and ownership.

My humble opinion: The core values we embed in AI systems – as individuals, communities, and citizens – will define their impact. It’s time to move beyond the age-old cry for equality; ethical AI presents an unparalleled opportunity for ALL stakeholders to lead with their core values across the entire development lifecycle, from data to models, agents, and applications. This is how we ensure true ownership and prevent engineered exclusions.
Let’s not miss this opportunity.
